According to head coach Jason Runner, the Tecumseh boys soccer program’s outlook is “very promising” for 2009.
Why? The Arrows only have to replace four seniors from last year’s club that went 13-4-2 and 8-1-2 in the Central Buckeye Conference. The Arrows lost to eventual D-I state runner-up Beavercreek in the district semifinals.
Key returners for Tecumseh include senior keeper Jacob Heckman, senior forward Zach Schwartz, senior outside mid Nick Dysinger and junior center mid Cameron Fritschie. Read the rest of this entry »

Second-year head coach Jason Brandeberry states the Elks goals are “to win the GWOC again and make the state tournament.”
Both are attainable.
Despite losing four first team GWOC golfers, Centerville returns two second teamers in seniors Shane Combs and Drew Dunaway. Combs had a nine-hole average of 39.8 last year, while Dunaway was less than a stroke behind (40.50). Read the rest of this entry »

The Indian Lake girls soccer program finished 5-11-1 last year and bowed out in the first round of the sectional tournament.
Although this year’s team is young, that might be a good thing. The Lakers are looking to continue reestablishing their program under second-year coaches Melissa Rice and Alex Cramer.
“Last year, a lot of basic fundamentals needed to be re-taught and improved on,” Rice said. “This year players have begun to train earlier knowing what they need to do and we will not have to take that extra time to develop players.” Read the rest of this entry »

Fort Recovery, despite being one of the smallest schools in the MAC, has an astounding number of seniors on its volleyball team – try seven.
The Indians haven’t had that many seniors for over a decade. One thing the program has never had is a Division III designation, which it does this season. Head coach Diana Rammel says the outlook is “positive with a team that gels well together.”
Experience and defense are strengths for a team that went 13-9 last year, but just 2-7 in the MAC. Read the rest of this entry »

The Indians finished just 6-12 last season but they return 10 starters and 14 letterwinners, which bodes well at any level but especially in Division III.
Among those back for Newton are a pair of first team Cross County Conference players: junior goalie Ryan Payne and sophomore center mid Jordan Hodges.
Payne, who was first team All-MVSSCA Dayton West, recorded shutouts in five of the Indians six wins. Hodges was the team’s leading scorer as a freshman. Read the rest of this entry »

DAYTON - Former Dayton Dunbar star basketball player Daequan Cook’s mom, Renae, instilled in him when he was younger to “stay grounded and know where he came from.” Cook took those words to heart and now the Miami Heat guard is putting that advice into action.
The reigning NBA 3-point champion wrapped up a free, two-day basketball camp Tuesday, June 23, at his high school alma mater for kids in third through twelfth grade in the Dayton community.
“It’s an honor and a privilege to be a proud citizen of Dayton and to come back to my community and have this basketball camp,” said Cook standing courtside at the camp dawning a bright red Miami Heat t-shirt. “There are a lot of kids that look up to me and I am their role model, so I felt like this was a good opportunity to give back to the kids that look up to me.” Read the rest of this entry »

Centerville’s Adam Replogle (Indiana) carried the ball 1-yard with 20 seconds left to give Ohio a 38-31 win in the 52nd annual Big 33 game Saturday in Hershey, Pa.
Alter’s Austin Boucher (Miami) led the game winning drive after Pennsylvania had tied the game 31-31 with under three minutes to go. Boucher also set a new Big 33 record for passing yards in a game with 255. That eclipsed the old record of 251 set by Pennsylvania’s Dave Robbins in 1996. Boucher was named Ohio’s MVP.
The victory snapped a three-game winning streak for Pennsylvania. Ohio has now won four of the last seven games
“It’s been a blast,” Boucher said. “It’s much more than a game.” Read the rest of this entry »

DAYTON – For the second straight year, the South prevailed over the North – this time by a 17-13 score – in the 26th annual Miami Valley Coaches’ Association Pigskin Classic Friday at Welcome Stadium.
Last year, the South pulled out a 20-12 victory to snap a four-game losing streak. The North now leads the series 18-8, and has won 15 of the last 20 games.
The offensive player of the game, Chaminade Julienne’s Isaiah Cordell, scored the winning touchdown on a 26 yard broken play late in the fourth quarter. He will play his football at Findlay in the fall.
A 24-yard field goal from Carlisle’s Josh Couch (at 1:14 of the second quarter) stood up as the first half’s only score.
Unofficially, the South amassed 346 total yards on offense (204 yards on 13-20 passing, 142 yards rushing on 32 punishing carries). Read the rest of this entry »
